MilkShelf generates your jar labels as downloadable PDFs sized for standard 2×1 inch direct thermal labels. Any of the printers below will work. Just download the PDF from your dashboard, open it on your phone, and hit Print. No ink, no toner — thermal printers use heat, so your only ongoing cost is label rolls.
Why Bluetooth? Most farmers label jars in a barn, milk room, or kitchen — not next to a WiFi router. Bluetooth printers pair directly with your phone, no internet connection needed. Open MilkShelf on your phone → Generate labels → Download PDF → Open with your printer app → print. Done.

Detailed Reviews
This is the printer we use to label our own jars every day. It's the most affordable Bluetooth thermal printer we've found that prints 2×1 labels, and once it's set up it's been a dependable daily workhorse. It connects via Bluetooth to your iPhone or Android, via USB to Mac and Windows, and prints fast at 150mm/s.
- What we use daily — confirmed 2×1 label support
- Most affordable option we've tested
- Bluetooth for iPhone, Android, Windows
- Compact footprint, fits anywhere
- Responsive support team (phone, email, remote desktop)
Heads up: Requires the free FlashLabel Pro app. Initial setup redirects you from one app to another — mildly confusing the first time, but a one-time step. We've occasionally seen Bluetooth hiccups on some Android phones.
A solid, widely-available alternative. The JADENS 268BT connects via Bluetooth to your iPhone or Android using the free PrintGo app, and via USB to Mac and Windows. Its main draw is that you can buy it locally at Best Buy or Target — handy for easy returns if you'd rather not order online. Supports 2×1 labels and prints at 150mm/s.
- Available at Best Buy and Target — buy locally, easy returns
- Confirmed 2×1 label support (1.57″–4.1″ width range)
- Bluetooth from your phone — no WiFi needed in the barn
- 1-year warranty, 30-day return guarantee
- Good customer support (phone, email, live chat)
Heads up: Mobile printing requires the PrintGo app (free). Mac only works via USB, not Bluetooth. Some users report occasional Bluetooth drops on laptops.
One of the best-selling thermal label printers on Amazon with thousands of reviews. The MUNBYN P130B has a large user community, which means it's easy to find YouTube tutorials, troubleshooting tips, and compatible labels. Solid build quality and reliable day-to-day performance.
- Bluetooth for iOS/Android via MUNBYN app, USB for Mac/Windows
- Supports 2×1 labels (1.57″–4.1″ width)
- Huge online community — tons of YouTube how-to videos
- Well-built and proven reliable
Heads up: Requires the free MUNBYN app for Bluetooth. Mac only supports USB (no Bluetooth on Mac).
The smallest printer on this list. Great reviews for reliability and print quality. If counter space is tight in your milk room, the Nelko's tiny footprint makes it easy to tuck onto a shelf. Has auto-label detection to prevent waste.
- Smallest footprint of any printer on this list
- Strong reviews for reliability and print quality
- Auto-label detection prevents wasted labels
- Bluetooth for iOS/Android, USB for Mac/Windows
Heads up: Requires Nelko app for Bluetooth (no AirPrint). Compact size means smaller label roll capacity.
The premium choice — and the easiest to set up if you have WiFi where you label jars. AirPrint means you can print from any device with zero app installs. Auto-detects label sizes. 650,000-label print head lifespan. But if your labeling area doesn't have WiFi, this printer's main advantage disappears.
- AirPrint — print from any device, no app needed
- Auto-detects label sizes including 2×1
- 650,000-label print head (years of farm use)
- Available at Best Buy for local pickup
Heads up: 2–3× the price of Bluetooth options. Requires WiFi — doesn't help in a barn without internet. Some users report occasional WiFi disconnects.
Label Buying Guide
What Labels to Buy
All these printers use direct thermal labels (no ink ribbon). Here's what to look for:
- Size: 2×1 inch (also listed as 2″ x 1″ or 50mm × 25mm)
- Type: Direct thermal (NOT thermal transfer — that requires ribbon)
- Core: 1″ core fits all printers listed above
- Cost: Typically $8–$15 per roll of 1,000–1,300 labels
- Brands: JADENS, MUNBYN, Rollo, and BETCKEY all sell compatible rolls
Pro tip: You don't have to buy labels from the same brand as your printer. Any standard 2×1 direct thermal label roll with a 1″ core will work in any of these printers. Shop by price.
How to Print Your Labels
- Log into your MilkShelf farmer dashboard
- Go to Labels and select the collection date
- Tap "Generate Labels" then "Print to thermal printer"
- Tap the three dots→ Open with → your printer app
- Print and stick labels on your jars!
That's it! Your labels are pre-formatted by MilkShelf to fit 2×1 labels perfectly. No resizing or layout adjustments needed.
